Chugga..chugga..choo..choo…
A sound that no matter what age you are, never gets old. Now whether or not you enjoy the rumbles of the passing trains with a chocolate milk or a beverage with a touch of moonshine, Steaming Tender appeals to folks of all ages.
I’ll be honest, I don’t necessarily live near or ever travel to Palmer, but I will definitely go out of my way for this restaurant. The atmosphere was great, the food was presented beautifully and certainly very tasty, but the welcoming staff and customer service experience is what did it for me.
I sat at the bar initially while we were waiting for a table and actually ended up having my entire meal there listening to the stories of people who worked on restoration of the train out front and people who worked tirelessly in the railroad industry. It was mesmerizing listening to their stories about how widely used railroad transportation is. Reminds me of radio, people say it is a dying breed, but I say its never been stronger.
Anywho, back to the good stuff. For dinner, I enjoyed the pork milanese; a thinly sliced pork cutlet breaded and sauteed with fresh mozzerella cheese and bruschetta style tomatoes. I cut right into it- just crispy enough on the outside and tender and juicy on the inside. It went great with the awesome blackberry-moonshine drink, the very skilled and entertaining bartender made me! But then again blackberry moonshine goes with every dish, so either way, grab one to have a little taste of summer. If you want a more simple dinner, dig into the Maverick burger (bacon, cheese, BBQ sauce, and onion ring!) or if you want something melt-in-your-mouth delicious I say go for the lobster mac and cheese- a twist on an old classic. The portion size will certainly give you a meal for the next day.
This restaurant sits inside of a 19th century romanesque style train station. Owners Blake & Robin Lamothe have been undergoing the restoration project since 1987! And what a great job they’ve done thus far. The train schedule is posted so you can be ready for them when they go by. Check out all the antiques placed throughout the restaraunt, even the bathrooms are an entertaining experience because they are packed with old photographs and artifacts. I’m not going to lie, I was so intrigued by what was in my bathroom, I went and looked at all the photos in the men’s bathroom as well…
And with that said, make sure to try them out next time you are in Palmer, or just make the trip there because Steaming Tender alone is worth it. Get your half off certificate right here.

Robyn, again another great review! My husband and I enjoy the Steaming Tender, The food is good and the atmosphere is AMAZING as it brings you back in time with all the photos and artifacts and the music in the OLD depot! Then, so exciting as you can hear the trains approach – EVERYONE in the restaurant turning their heads to watch as the rumble passes by hoping for the train to give a whistle! Well worth the experience! We will be back we have not had brunch in the diner cart yet but looking forward to it – LOVE the outdoor seating in the summer! I can envision back in the day, the ladies dressed in their long dresses just waiting for their train.
